Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) is hosting free psychological first aid training for community disaster teams and community members in the TRC region.
‘Participants will learn about the psychosocial impact of crises, how to provide practical and emotional support, and how and when to provide psychological first aid,’ said Local Disaster Management Group chair Councillor Bernie Wilce.
‘In an emergency or disaster situation our community needs people who are trained to help others feel safe, calm, hopeful and connected to others.
‘By reducing initial distress, meeting emerging needs, providing coping mechanisms and encouraging adjustment to the situation, these trained people provide essential support to the community.
‘Participants will learn how to identify distress reactions, how to offer psychological first aid, and importantly, how to look after themselves while helping.
‘Courses are available in Atherton on Friday 11 or Saturday 12 September so submit your expression of interest by Wednesday 2 September,’ said Councillor Wilce.
