Wet Weather and Flood Preparedness

Impacts from Tropical Cyclone Narelle are currently being experienced by northern communities, and we hope they stay safe.

Widespread showers and the possibility of further heavy rain can be expected over the coming days across the Tablelands as a result the cyclone system.

Catchments across our region are already wet to saturated, with some flooding already occurring from recent rainfall. Additional rain may lead to rapid river rises and further flooding.

Safety and Preparedness Advice:

  • Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, creeks, and waterways. Never walk, swim, or play in floodwater. It is extremely dangerous.
  • Always drive to the conditions. Turn your headlights on so it’s easy for other drivers to see you, double your distance between you and the car in front, obey road closure signs, and slow down.
  • Never drive across a flooded road and plan alternative routes to avoid flooded roads. Remember, if it’s flooded, forget it.
  • Keep up to date with ABC and local media; the situation can change quickly.
  • Prepare for wet weather: ensure gutters and drains are clear, check your emergency kit, and secure loose items around your property.
  • Discuss a safety plan with your family, including how to contact each other and where to shelter if conditions worsen.
