APA runs regular activities such as Youth Theatre, Singing, Script Club and Bavarian Dancing, as well as develops shows during which time, participants may meet two to four times weekly.
Youth Theatre: occurs Thursday afternoons during each school term from 4pm – 5.30pm for 9 years+; includes theatre games, improvisation and performing. The group generally works towards doing 1 – 2 productions per year.
Tuesday Singing: Singing around the piano in unison and harmony: has generally occurred on Tuesday mornings from 10am – 12 noon but in 2023 is in recess. The group is looking for a new choral leader.
APA Script Club: on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month from 10.30am – 12.30pm at the Platypus Park Shelter in Atherton. The group reads and discusses plays over a cuppa.
Bavarian Dancing: occurs Tuesday evenings from 7am – 9pm. Beginners are welcomed and encouraged. However, in 2023 the group is in recess due to commitments. It is hoped that it will recommence in late 2023 or early 2024.
Shows: generally take between six weeks and three months to prepare, depending on levels of complexity. Musicals may take up to six months. During the lead-up, particularly in the month prior to opening night, the theatre may be in use almost daily by various participants.
The opportunities for volunteers are limitless.
Those who love to act, sing or dance have the chance to participate in shows. There are opportunities to direct, stage manage, work backstage, produce, do lights and sound, front of house, costumes, sets, publicity, painting banners, and work in the library – the possibilities are endless, and all are welcome.
The AGM for 2023 was held at the APA Theatre on Thursday 4th May at 6pm.
Atherton Performing Arts generally does three or four shows a year.
These comprise adult and youth musical, play and concert productions.
Each show usually goes for between two and twelve sessions.
Generally speaking, youth shows run four times, and adult shows seven.
Musicals may have up to twelve showings. Musicals generally happen once every two years. The musical INTO THE WOODS is being presented from 27 May – 11 June 2023.

APA works with other theatre groups in the far north in presenting 1 Act Play Festivals biennially, works with The Arts Council Tablelands (TACTIC) in hosting international and national guest artist events to the Tablelands, hires the theatre out to other community groups for workshops, eg Drum and Dance Cairns and to other Theatre groups and schools for performance, eg Tropical Arts Cairns or schools on the Tablelands.
APA works with TRC, our lessor, to upgrade the facilities that the Atherton Performing Arts Theatre offers.
