Seniors’ Month

Get ready to socially connect this October as Queensland Seniors’ Month (Sunday 1 – Tuesday 31 October) returns for another year.

We will be celebrating Seniors’ Month with a free Ageing Well Expo on Tuesday 24 October at Merriland Hall in Atherton and regional events throughout the month. This is part of our Age-Friendly Strategy.

Ageing Well Forums

These forums bring together a panel of experts to discuss ageing well. Topics will include advance care planning and directives, enduring power of attorney, My Aged Care and writing a will. Come along for a cuppa and a chat and pick up some resources at the same time.

Ageing well forums are taking place at the following locations:

  • Yungaburra Community Hall — 9.30am–12noon Thursday 12 October
  • Malanda Pavilion Supper Room — 1.30–4.00pm Thursday 12 October
  • Ravenshoe Town Hall — 9.30am–12noon Wednesday 18 October
  • Herberton Town Hall — 1.30–4.00pm Wednesday 18 October
  • Coordination Centre, Atherton — 9.30am–12noon Thursday 2 November

Seniors Safety Squad

9.30am–2.30pm Tuesday 10 October at the Coordination Centre, 15 Vernon Street, Atherton.

Seniors Safety Squad is a multi-agency disaster preparedness education program. It provides a focus on learning about natural hazards and disasters that occur in our region. It helps participants understand how TRC and other agencies respond to disasters.

Participants will gain knowledge on building their capacity to prepare for, respond to and recover from disaster events, as part of a series of interactive and fun activities.

Seniors On The Road

Both sessions are fully booked.

We are partnering with Department of Transport and Main Roads and Queensland Police Service to host free Seniors on the Road information sessions. This is a good opportunity to get a refresher and learn about safe driving, driving as an older person, health and driving, transition from driving, road rules and mobility scooters.

Pensioner Pre-Cyclone Clean Up

If you receive an age or disability pension and are in a kerbside collection area we’ll remove green waste, iron and general yard debris as a part of our free pre-cyclone clean up. White goods, furniture, household rubbish, car bodies and tyres are not eligible for collection.

Register by Friday 27 October. Collections will begin in early November.

Ageing Well Expo

9.30am–12noon Tuesday 24 October at Merriland Hall in Atherton.

The free Ageing Well Expo will include free health checks, demonstrations, guest speakers and exhibitors from health, legal, ageing well, and community and recreational groups. It’s also an opportunity to come together and connect with other seniors and enjoy some free light refreshments.
