Mayor Rod Marti resigns on health grounds

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rod Marti has tendered his resignation on health grounds following a serious medical event.

His resignation will take effect at close of business on Monday 29 June 2026.

Mayor Marti attended the Atherton Hospital emergency department on Wednesday 20 May after experiencing a severe headache and was later flown to Townsville University Hospital for urgent treatment.

‘After investigations, I was fortunate to have a medical procedure the following morning to address the cause of the pain,’ Mayor Marti said.

‘After two weeks of care and observation in hospital, I returned home. Since then, I have been recovering well, following the advice of my local GP and other health professionals.

‘It is a relief to be home with my family on the Tablelands and to be returning to good health.”

Mayor Marti said that, after taking time to consider his position, speak with his family and receive medical advice, it had become clear there was only one responsible pathway.

‘I tender my resignation as Mayor of Tablelands Regional Council effective close of business Monday 29 June 2026,’ he said.

‘I extend my gratitude to the community for its support over the last six years as Mayor and during my earlier term as Councillor from 2012 to 2016.

‘It has been a true privilege to serve this community.’

Mayor Marti also thanked Council employees for their service to the region.

‘Every organisation is only as good as its people, and this organisation has so many people dedicated to serving our community,’ he said.

‘The critical work delivered across Council’s footprint every day, often against significant external and environmental challenges, deserves to be fully understood and acknowledged.

‘Thank you for all that you do every day.’

Tablelands Regional Council acknowledges Mayor Marti’s significant contribution to the region during his service as both Mayor and Councillor.

His leadership helped Council achieve financial sustainability, progressed difficult but necessary reforms, and advanced major infrastructure and community projects, including Priors Creek Parklands and long-term planning for critical water and wastewater infrastructure.

Council thanks Mayor Marti for his leadership and service and wishes him and his family well as he continues his recovery.

Under the Local Government Act 2009, the vacancy in the office of Mayor must be filled by a by-election within two months of the office becoming vacant.

Deputy Mayor Dave Bilney will act as Mayor during the vacancy.

Further information about the by-election will be provided as arrangements are confirmed.
