Priors Creek Parklands opening weekend starts with an SOS from ABBA under the stars
Tablelands Regional Council has announced the first headline act for the opening weekend of Priors Creek Parklands, with SOS The Australian ABBA Tribute Show set to perform on Friday 10 July.
The performance will headline night one of the new precinct’s opening weekend, and marks the start of a broader ongoing event and activity program designed to bring the space to life for our community to experience Priors Creek Parklands as a place to gather, celebrate and connect.
Council’s General Manager Placemaking Greg Bowden said the opening weekend was about more than one performance. It was about activating a major community space and building momentum around a precinct with a big future that will benefit the entire Tablelands.
‘Priors Creek Parklands is one of our region’s newest and most ambitious public spaces, and opening weekend is our chance to show what this precinct looks like when it is full of life, energy and people,’ Mr Bowden said.
‘We watched Delta Goodrem rock Eurovision and now it is time for SOS to rock the Tablelands with a high-energy start to the weekend. We want this opening to showcase the role that great public spaces can play in social connection, local business opportunity, tourism and the wider identity of the Tablelands.’
SOS The Australian ABBA Tribute Show brings the music, costumes and full-band energy of one of the world’s best-loved pop groups, performing hits including Waterloo, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!, Dancing Queen and The Winner Takes It All.
More entertainment, activities and event details for the opening weekend will be announced soon.
Council is also encouraging local food vendors, market operators, entertainers and other event-focused businesses or groups to register their interest in being part of both the opening weekend and ongoing activation of the precinct. Expressions of interest are now open on the TRC website.
The opening weekend is expected to add to an already busy period across the Tablelands, with locals and visitors encouraged to make a weekend of it by exploring what else is on around the region. With the Gillies Centenary in Yungaburra, the Iron and Steam Fair in Herberton, the Mareeba Rodeo and more going on as well, it’s a bumper weekend to visit the Tablelands.
Mayor Rod Marti said the opening of Priors Creek Parklands would mark an important moment for the Tablelands community.
‘Opening weekend will be a chance for locals and visitors to enjoy the precinct, enjoy time together and be part of something new for everyone across the Tablelands. Our aim has always been to deliver a public space with event activations such as this to bring the community together.’ Mayor Marti said.
‘It is an honour to help mark this important milestone in a project that Council began in 2016 and to continue the work of bringing new life to the Atherton CBD and the wider Tablelands community.’
Council is inviting the community to follow the Priors Creek Live page for updates, event announcements and information on how to get involved.
