Tablelands to mark 81st anniversary of Victory in the Pacific

Tablelands Regional Council will host a commemorative service on Saturday 15 August to mark the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Pacific and the end of the Second World War.

The event at Rocky Creek War Memorial Park, Kennedy Highway, Tolga, includes the unveiling of new individual and military unit plaques honouring service personnel connected to the Atherton Tablelands.

During the Second World War, the Tablelands became the largest military base in Australia. Rocky Creek was the site of the largest military hospital in the Southern Hemisphere, and the park sits on the former site of the laundry and medical stores for the 2/2nd Australian General Hospital.

The day starts with a family commemoration from 10am for those unveiling new plaques, followed by the dedication and unveiling of individual plaques from 11.15am. From midday, the Tolga Museum and Historical Society will run a sausage sizzle, and the Tablelands Brass Band will play 1940s swing music. The Memorial Service runs from 1pm to 2pm.

VP Day marks the day Imperial Japan surrendered, bringing the Second World War to an end.

TRC Acting Mayor Dave Bilney said, “The Tablelands played a critical role in Australia’s wartime history, and Rocky Creek stands as a reminder of that service and sacrifice. On behalf of Council, I encourage the community to join us in honouring those who served.”

Council reminds motorists that the speed limit on the Kennedy Highway near the memorial park entrance will drop to 60km/h from 8.30am to 12.30pm on the day. Limited camping is available at the adjoining RV rest area for self-contained vehicles, though space will be reduced to allow for event parking.
