Trade Waste

Trade waste is liquid waste discharged into the sewer that is generated by industry, small business, commercial enterprises, clubs and organisations including charities, commercial kitchens, laundries, hairdressers, workshops, medical facilities, fruit packing sheds, accommodation places, kennels, etc. These industries and businesses are called trade waste generators (TWGs).

Trade waste can be:

  • treated at an approved treatment facility
  • discharged into the sewer with approval from TRC
  • treated and discharged into the environment with approval from an environmental authority under the Environmental Protection Act 1994.

Trade waste may need to be treated so it complies with our sewer admission limits (appendices 1 and 2 in our Trade Waste Management Plan) before it can be released into the sewerage system. In Queensland, the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008 regulates trade waste discharge and requires trade waste generators to obtain a permit to discharge trade waste. Permits are subject to conditions outlined in our Trade Waste Management Plan.

Trade waste outside the admission limits can be treated using:

  • appropriate pre-treatment device/s e.g. grease trap, neutralising arrestor, silt arrestor, oily water separator, etc.
  • cleaner production principles.

TWGs are required to:

  • apply for trade waste approval
  • ensure compliance with conditions
  • maintain the infrastructure
  • advise us of changes to the business
  • pay trade waste application charges.

Trade waste-producing businesses that lease or rent a premise must have consent to generate trade waste from the property owner or agent. Property owners must transfer trade waste fees and charges to their TWG. If more than one TWG operates from a single property, each TWG must apply for trade waste approval.

Trade waste approvals cannot be transfered. When a trade waste business changes ownership, the existing approval is terminated and the new tenant/owner must apply for approval.
