Celebrate NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week (Sunday 2 – Sunday 9 July) is a time to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

‘It is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on Earth,’ said Mayor Rod Marti.

‘This year’s theme is For Our Elders, which reminds us that, across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families.

‘They have been the pillars of strength and wisdom, carrying the weight of their culture and guiding others with their unparalleled knowledge.

‘This week is an opportunity to take a moment to pay our respects to the Elders we have lost, those who have left an indelible mark on our hearts and continue to inspire us.

‘As a Council, we are committed to playing a critical role, in partnership with our community, in establishing a clear roadmap towards a reconciled, just and equitable region.

‘There will be celebrations and activities across the region and we are inviting the community to attend the Tablelands Regional Council’s flag raising ceremony and morning tea at 10am on Monday 3 July.

‘We’ll be raising the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islands and Australian flags outside our office on Mabel Street in Atherton.

‘We fly the three symbols to honour every Australian and recognising the integral contribution First Nations Peoples have made to our region and our country.

‘Other groups and organisations across the region are hosting celebrations and you can find details on our event calendar — be sure to add your event as well.

‘It’s fantastic to see our community embracing NAIDOC week and celebrating our community’s First Nations Peoples,’ said Mayor Marti.
