Tableland Regional Gallery will host Xplore Arts Festival's Woman and the Water exhibition during October.

The Xplore Arts Festival is an initiative of local churches and according to Anglican Father Jonathon Whereat, the response to the program this year has been very pleasing.

"We have a large number of works to display in the gallery and, I think visitors to the gallery will be very impressed with what they see," he said.

Local primary and high schools have entered the competition and there is a range of work from both amateur and professional artists.

The theme, the Woman and the Water, has elicited an exceptional exploration. Some of the artworks have a very political interpretation; others connect with life in outback Australia and the scarcity of water; and a number look at the social, psychological and spiritual situation of the woman in the story.

The exhibition, which involves more than 20 artists and 40-plus artworks, will be launched on Friday, 2 October at 6pm by the Catholic Bishop of Cairns – Bishop James Foley.

The public are also welcome to attend other events, including movie nights and workshops, during the week as part of the Xplore Arts Festival.

Programs are available at the Gallery and from the Anglican Church. More information about the festival can be obtained by calling 4091 4251.
