The 80th birthday of the Majestic Theatre and its refurbishment will be celebrated in style on Saturday, 14 November.

The theatre, which is one of the oldest continually operating country picture theatres in Australia, has undergone a $50,000 refurbishment, jointly funded by the former Eacham Shire Council and the State Government under the Queensland 150th Legacy Infrastructure Program.

The restoration works carried out on the iconic building included:

  •  repairs to the roof of the theatre to prevent leaking into the roof space and floor
  •  enclosing the under-building space to improve security
  •  repairing of the front façade to restore it to its original appearance
  •  installing ceiling ventilation and,
  •  lining the front wall of the building behind the façade.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said the refurbishment would ensure the building would continue as an important cultural hub for the community.

"The Majestic Theatre is one of those buildings that typifies the history of the region and it was crucial that these works be done to ensure it will be operating for many more years to come," he said.

The theatre opened its doors on 14 December 1929, with screening of the first films a week later.

The theatre's 80th birthday and the refurbishment will be celebrated with an official function starting at 5.30pm on Saturday, 14 November, where wine and nibbles will be served. The Tablelands Brass Band and the Vintage Car Club will also take part in the event.

All members of the community are invited to attend.

The function will followed by a performance of the musical, Razzamatazz, starting at 7.30pm. Bookings and tickets ($20 each) for the musical are available by calling Gina on 0407 178 898 or email to Gina [dot] Raccanello [at] bigpond [dot] com
