The Great Northern Mine was once the heart of a booming tin industry. Herberton’s hills rang with the explosive booms of dynamite, while the racket of machinery at the Great Northern Battery was an incessant backdrop to daily life.

The Herberton Mining Centre now provides a relaxing retreat amongst towering gums, offering stories of those early days for all to enjoy and appreciate.

From here take the Great Northern Mine Walk — an interpreted walk through the original mine workings and the start of the Herberton Fire Trails.

Dig into the past in our museum. Push our buttons and crank our handles! You can pan for tin or pump your own water, learn to use a hand drill to make holes for your explosives! Make sure you look up and down, and search every corner … this museum is every explorer’s dream!

Closed Christmas Day, Good Friday and all of February.
