Pest Management

Council aims to reduce the detrimental impacts of pests on the shire’s agricultural, environmental and cultural assets.

The Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002 addresses weeds and feral animals including the responsibilities of Council and land owners. This legislation places the responsibility of weed and feral animal management on land owners. Working collaboratively with community representatives and regional stakeholders, we use a planned and proactive approach to managing pests.

Most Threatening Pests

The most important pests threatening the Tablelands Regional Shire are Tobacco Weed, Giant Rats Tail Grass, and Wild Dogs. Feral Deer are also causing problems in the Wet Tropics area.

Useful resources include:

  • Weed Spray Unit

A weed spray unit is available to land owners to assist with weed control.
  • Wild Dogs

A combination of trapping, fencing and poison baiting is used in conjunction with consideration of dingo/wild dog behaviour for effective management of wild dogs in the region.
