Located in Winfield Park, Malanda the Community Revegetation Unit (CRU) grows native species from local seed collected by straff and volunteers. Currently the CRU propogates at least 50 species of rainforest trees and turn over 60,000 plants a year. The key areas of focus are:
The staff and volunteers at CRU can help landholders, community groups and Council protect and revegetate degraded land and restore rainforests using effective land management practices. They provide support through advice, trees and on-ground support for fixing vegetation management issues.
Plant Nursery
Nursery operations include:
The nursery provides seedlings for the shire, landholders and many community groups including the Barron River Catchment Management Association, Malanda Landcare, Johnstone River Catchment Management Association and the Tree Kangaroo and Mammal Group.
Building Forests
The CRU handles tree planting projects including site preparation, planting and follow up maintenance. Generally funding is sourced through Federal government grants for major revegetation projects with local landholders, private companies and government authorities. Plantings are designed to suit client’s need. All plants used are locally sourced native species.
Volunteers
Opportunities exist for people interested in plants, gardening and environmental work to volunteer at the nursery. You can learn about local rainforest plants and their propagation. Volunteers are welcome every Tuesday and Thursday from 8am to 4pm.
Training Facility
The nursery provides a valuable training facility for students involved in horticultural, environmental, and Conservation and Land Management courses where students can participate in daily nursery activities and tree planting projects in the field.
Vegetation Management & Protection
The Community Revegetation Unit is involved in the management of significant vegetation remnants in the southern Tablelands area. This involves the eradication of invasive environmental weeds such as Anredera cordifolia (Madeira Vine) and Turbina corymbosa (Christmas Vine). These vines in particular pose a major threat to the critically endangered Mabi remnants in the Yungaburra to Atherton locality.
