During and After the Cyclone
During the Cyclone
- Do not evacuate unless you have been officially advised to do so.
- Stay safe, stay inside and shelter (well clear of windows) in the strongest part of the building. This is often the cellar, bathroom, internal hallway / passageway.
- Disconnect all electrical appliances. Keep your battery powered radio on for updates.
- Keep evacuation and emergency kits close to hand.
- In a severe cyclone, mattresses and blankets will assist in protecting yourself and your family. If the building starts to break up consider anchoring yourselves to or under a strong fixture, for example a sturdy bed, table water pipe, etc.
- If the building starts to break up, protect yourself with mattresses, rugs or blankets under a strong table or bench or hold onto a solid fixture, e.g. a water pipe.
- Beware the calm “eye”. If the wind drops, don’t assume the cyclone is over, violent winds will soon resume from another direction. Stay home, stay calm, stay safe and wait for the official “all clear”.
- If driving, stop (handbrake on and in gear) – but well away from the sea and clear of trees, power lines and streams. Stay in the vehicle.
After the Cyclone
- Stay indoors until authorities officially advise it is safe and that the cyclone has passed.
- Continue to listen to local radio for official warnings and advice.
- Check for gas leaks. Don’t use electric appliances if wet.
- If you had to evacuate don’t go home until advised.
- If you need to evacuate use a recommended route and don’t rush.
- Beware of damaged power lines they could be live,
- Beware of other hazards e.g. damaged bridges, buildings, trees, flooded watercourses, etc.
- Never enter floodwaters.
- Heed all warnings and don’t go sightseeing. Check/help neighbours instead.
- Avoid making unnecessary phone calls - the phone system may be limited and should be kept available for emergency services.
