Majestic Theatre

Located on Eacham Place Malanda, the Majestic Theatre is the oldest continually operating country picture theatre in Australia. It is an icon of national cinema heritage and Far North Queensland settler history and architecture.

Designed by architect Bob Hassell and constructed by builder Albie Halfpapp, the theatre opened its doors on 14 December 1929, with screening of the first films a week later.

Movies are screened every weekend at the Majestic Theatre and local productions by the Malanda Theatre Company are held throughout the year.

In 2009 the theatre celebrated 80 years of operation with a $50,000 refurbishment, jointly funded by Council and the State Government under the Queensland 150th Legacy Infrastructure Program.

The restoration works carried out on the iconic building included:

  •  repairs to the roof of the theatre to prevent leaking into the roof space and floor
  •  enclosing the under-building space to improve security
  •  repairing of the front façade to restore it to its original appearance
  •  installing ceiling ventilation and,
  •  lining the front wall of the building behind the façade
